Mr. Walker helps a teacher connect with her students after brain surgery (!!)

A few months back, my newest picture book, Mr. Walker Steps Out, popped up in a surprising place. It turns out that a fourth-grade teacher, K.D. Meucci, had decided to read the book as part of her regular Thursday night storytime with her students over Facebook Live. Which might not have been so remarkable in and of itself . . . except that she did it one day after having brain surgery.

I know!

Mrs. Meucci said she didn’t want to skip the storytime, because it was important to her to reassure her students that she would be okay and that, like Mr. Walker in the book, she would be back to her job in no time.

This past week, I was lucky enough to get to talk to Mrs. Meucci about her experience, and our chat was recorded by Shannon Perrine of WTAE Pittsburgh’s Action News 4. You can catch the news clip here!

You will be happy to know that Mrs. Meucci’s tumor was found to be benign, and that she seems to be healing remarkably well. In fact, yesterday she headed back to her classroom. (Watch that news clip and try not to tear up when you see how excited her students are to have her back!!)

I’m so honored that my book got to play a small, surprising role in this remarkable story. Mrs. Meucci, I’m so glad you’re back on the job! I can tell those kiddos missed you. :)

Happy reading, everyone!

Lisa
