1993 A to Z: Q is for . . .

It should not shock you to learn that there aren’t a lot of “Q” words that exemplify the 90s. Still, I did find one! So, without further ado, it’s time for the next installment of . . .

1993 A to Z!

As always, this “Q” word is something prominently featured in my new book, Rewind (now in bookstores!!!!), so let’s check it out!

quarters

Okay, yes, quarters have been around for over 200 years, and they’re still well-circulated today, so they’re not entirely a 90s thing. But unlike today, quarters just weren’t loose change—they were a necessity. Want to use a laundromat? Park your car? By a newspaper? Make a phone call? You gotta have a quarter. And for a 90s kid, quarters were gold for one very good reason—the arcade. If you manage to get lucky enough to find a retro video game arcade near you these days, the machines likely take tokens, or credit cards, or the place has some sort of wrist band situation. But back in the day, it was a quarters-only situation. You would save up all your hard-earned babysitting dollars, or beg your parents for a fiver, and then make for the change machine, where those glorious coins would drop down into the metal dish with their satisfying clinks and clangs. I have many memories of spending long afternoons at the arcade with my brother, our pockets weighed down with change. It doesn’t get much more 90s than that.
